A rupees One crore twenty five lakh (Rs. 1 25 00 000/-) grant-in-aid was received from the Department of Atomic Energy, Government of India, towards the purchase of the Bhabhatron II radiotherapy cobalt unit. This unit, designed by the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre, is indigenously manufactured by Panacea Medical Technologies (P) Ltd. The machine started treating patients from 23rd August 2008. This grant-in-aid should prove to be a major boost to our efforts of providing proper and economical treatment to the poorest of the poor in central India.

From August 15, 1995 (the day we started offering radiotherapy treatment) to December 31, 2007, we have offered radiotherapy treatment to 3053; of which 1218 were treated completely free of charge, while charges were partially waived off for 623.

Till 28.2.1999, all patients were treated free of cost. From March 1, 1999, the Board of Permanent Trustees decided to start a graded system of charges - from completely free treatment for the very poor patients to full charges from the patients who can afford it. Given the socio-economic conditions in India, we strictly follow the principle of never denying treatment to a patient because s/he does not have the necessary funds and patients who are not able to pay are offered either partial waiver of the fees or completely free radiotherapy.  A significant number of our patients belong to the lower income group and come from the rural and tribal areas.

We believe that peer review is an important source for continuous improvement and share treatment - related data with the eminent, internationally recognised experts who visit the Foundation.

Right now, radiotherapy is offered on an outpatient basis and patients are provided transportation from Indore to the Institute and back (a total distance of approx. 26 km.).

From June 2000, we offer heavily subsidized accommodation facility at our dharamshala, for patients not wanting to do the daily commute for the 6 weeks of radiotherapy treatment. This dharamshala was constructed thanks to the efforts of the Lions Club of Indore Mahanagar.

So far more than 350 patients and their families availed of our dharamshala facilities while they were undergoing the 6 weeks of radiotherapy at our Institute, some of these were offered this facility free of charge while there was partial waiver of charges for some others.

    Surgery

All patients seen at the camps are offered free surgery, if that is the identified line of treatment. More than 1686 free surgeries (including laryngectomy, commando, radical mastectomy and complicated reconstructive surgery) have been performed on such camp cases. Our team of doctors has performed a majority of the operations at the Mission Hospital, Indore. The patient or the local sponsoring agency has to bear the cost of travel and hospital, including the cost of medicines, while the doctors offer their services free.

For the last 7 years, we have also organized surgical camps with the help of the district administrations. These camps were held at the district cancer hospitals and the entire operation theatre facilities were placed at the disposal of our team. The local surgeons assisted during the surgeries, this facilitated the post-operative care of the patients.

The major learning has been that if the local doctor is offered adequate training, then it is possible to carry out the diagnostic investigations at the local level, it is also possible to do some of the major surgeries here. This ensures earlier detection and also lower cost of treatment. With this objective in mind, we have conducted demonstrative surgeries and designed training programmes in early detection.
