Ms. Priya Dutt Visits The Indore Cancer Foundation

On our invitation, Ms. Priya Dutt, Member of Parliament from Mumbai & trustee of the Nargis Dutt Memorial Charitable Trust, visited the Indore Cancer Foundation for the day on 22nd March 2010.

Her day long programme began with a meeting with the permanent trustees. She was given an overview on the activities of Foundation by the Honorary Secretary, Dr. Digpal Dharkar, Working Trustees Drs. Baldev Dembani & Dr. Tushar Phulambrikar and Radiotherapist & Medical Superintendent of the Indian Institute of Head & Neck Oncology, Dr. Vandana Jain.

We presented Ms. Dutt a photograph of her father, Late Shri Sunil Dutt, taken in 1988, on the occasion of his visit to Indore for the inauguration of our Foundation. The vote of thanks was proposed by Mr. Ashok Chitale, Chairman of the Board of Permanent Trustees.


Speaking to the media post the presentation session, Ms. Dutt expressed a wish to help the Indore Cancer Foundation and said she felt that there was no need for cancer patients to go anywhere as good treatment was available in places like the Foundation. It was the cost effective treatment and extensive out reach programmes that impressed her, she added.

At the flagship project of the Foundation, the Indian Institute of Head & Neck Oncology, Ms. Dutt was welcomed by the staff of the Institute and was shown around the institute by Lt. Col. Datey (Retd.), Honorary Chief Administrative Officer of the Institute. She planted a sapling in front of the institute, inaugurated a dental chair donated by the family of Late Shri Vijay Ramawat, saw the Lions Club Indore Mahanagar donated dharamshala in the company of its prime crusader, Dr. Manish Bandishte. The dharamshala is now being renovated to include an in-patients’ facility.

She formally inaugurated the Bhabhatron II by unveiling a plaque that included our acknowledgement and gratitude to Dr. KA Dinshaw for her signal contribution that got us a grant from the Department of Atomic Energy for the purchase of this cobalt unit.


She was shown the equipment that has recently been acquired with the financial support of the Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) and visited the site of the proposed construction that will house the linear accelerator that is to be gifted by SAMEER, Department of Information Technology, Government of India.

The vote of thanks was proposed by Messrs. SN Khandelwal & Arshad Rashid.

On her way back, as a detour, she saw the exquisite collection of vintage cars of Shri Sharad Sanghi, Permanent Trustee of the Foundation.

She also visited the Mission Hospital, Indore, in order to meet some of the poor patients being treated by the dedicated surgical team of the Foundation.

The last programme on her agenda was a meeting with the members of the Breast Cancer Support Group.

Ms. Dutt’s visit brought a new charge to the employees and volunteers, joy to the patients and their relatives and a powerful, new ray of hope to our nascent institute.

After visiting the institute in March, Congress MP From Mumbai, Priya Dutt, provided financial assistance of Rs 35 lakh to the ICF through Nargis Dutt Memorial Foundation (NDMF), New York.
