Screening for cancer in Rewa division

The Divisional Commissioner of Rewa requested the Foundation to support their cancer screening, detection and treatment programme in Rewa division that comprises Rewa, Satna, Sidhi & Singrauli.

The preliminary meeting, held on 23rd February 2013, was chaired by the Commissioner, Shri Pradip Khare, IAS, and was attended by district collectors of the division, Joint Director Health Services and doctors from medical colleges & the district health set up. The Foundation team was led by Dr. Dharkar.

Shri Rajendra Shukla, Cabinet Minister for Energy and Mineral Resources in Madhya Pradesh, was the Chief Guest.

The modalities of organizing this programme were discussed and it was decided that the first stage comprising multi filter door-to-door survey for cancers of the breast, head & neck, cervix and prostate would be done by the health functionaries of Rewa division. This would help create awareness in the general population and also help identify possible cancer cases.

On the 28th & 29th of May 2013, Dr. Dharkar and his assistant Dr. Ghanshyam Dawar examined patients shortlisted by the very active health care officers of Rewa, Satna, Sidhi and Singrauli districts. The patients were examined at the Medical College, Rewa (201 patients of which 28 were clinically positive for cancer) and the district hospitals at Sidhi (168 patients from Sidhi & Singrauli, of which 35 were clinically positive for cancer) & Satna (104 patients seen of which 17 were clinically positive for cancer). So, 473 patients were examined of which 80 were clinically positive for cancer.

The Foundation team was accompanied through out by Dr. Singh, Joint Director Health, Rewa division.

The close monitoring by Mr. Khare, Commissioner, Rewa, ensured the success of this programme. At Rewa, the district collector, Mr. Shivnarayan Roopala ensured that below poverty line patients received prompt guidance. At Sidhi, the district collector, Mr. Masud Akhtar was present during the entire hospital proceedings.

Special mention needs to be made of the help received from Dr. Kushwaha, Dean, Rewa Medical College & Dr. Tiwari, Civil Surgeon, Rewa; and Dr. Shukla & Dr. Dwivedi at Sidhi; and Dr. Gautam & Dr. SB Singh at Satna.
